AI is infiltrating our personal lives and the workplace, and soon will be everywhere and irreplaceable in everything you do. At home and in the workplace. Developing and cultivating an AI Mindset will become a must for the modern knowledge worker. In a series of short blogs, I will explore core elements of an AI mindset.

Collaboration in the enterprise

Collaboration adds value to end-to-end processes, relationships, and at an aggregate level to a business. It does not necessarily come naturally. 50% of people behave cooperatively, and about 30% behave selfishly. In one of my field studies, only 42% of participants answered Yes to the question: “Team members proactively engage across all business functions to solve issues.”

Collaboration goes beyond cooperation; the difference is that you work together to achieve shared goals, rather than your own goals. Deep collaborative relationships go even further, and show an emotional investment in the other party, with an intent to grow the other party and make them thrive.

A company that wants to drive a collaborative culture needs to create a common purpose and vision with shared goals, recruit and train cooperators, reward cooperative behaviours, develop great horizontal processes to support collaborative efforts, and performance manage selfish employees out of the business.

Collaborators cross silo’s proactively to establish relationships and work on common goals with another function. They overcome basic human instinct to stay safe in their silo and show confidence to step out of their comfort zone.

Collaborating with AI

Kasparov’s law indicates that collaborating with AI leads to superior performance. His law has been acknowledged in the field studies in medicine where doctors diagnosing with an AI, outperform a doctor’s own judgement or the AI’s judgement. The future knowledge worker will perform better when collaborating with AI across most – if not all – industries and functions.

To support human-AI collaboration, companies must encourage and reward their employees to collaborate with AI, invest in AI platforms, and adapt horizontal processes to support AI-collaborators. AI-collaboration will have different phases:

  • Personal AI cooperation to achieve individual productivity or learning goals.

  • Multi-person functional AI cooperation to achieve functional goals.

  • Multi-function AI collaboration, achieving company goals above functional goals

The AI mindset

The AI mindset naturally cooperates with AI to learn and increase personal productivity and is proactive in the use of AI across functions to achieve company goals. The AI mindset finds ways to continuously improve interaction between humans and AI. The AI mindset learns from AI, but also guides the AI with their human knowledge, with the intent to teach and grow the AI.

Collaborating with AI is a feat of the modern knowledge worker.
